Powerblogs is ending - moving to TypePad !

Lost My Lease

What a shame. PowerBlogs is hanging it up on November 30, so I have barely a month to find a new blog host.

I started blogging in 2004 using Blogger.com, which I still use for two other blogs. Back then, Blogger was up and down, fast and slow, and I decided to spend a little to get a quality service, which I think Powerblogs has been. It's not fancy but it works, the only real outage being a major fire at the server farm they use in Houston.

Since then, Blogger.com has improved significantly, with many nice features, and it's still free. Still, I'd like to consider some alternatives if they're worth the money. One key requirement is that it be entirely web based as I use 4 different computers.

*** UPDATE ***

I know many have migrated away from it, but a quick survey had me looking at TypePad, and that's in fact my decision. Follow the link in the banner, but bear in mind job one is to move the content.

Typepad and wordpress are really nice sites which are both free. One thing that is really cool with both of these is that they are all web based but also supported by Windows Live Writer.

I know you hit lots of computers to update blog posts but if you haven't looked at Live Writer its super cool. Little windows app that connects to your blog, all of your posts are on all of your computer, can update anywhere and can insert images, maps, video, basically anything and it publishes automatically to the web. I was a big "must be web only" guy but live writer has changed my life.

We use TypePad at work, and I just set up a WordPress blog recently for a ministry. I highly recommend WP. And it's free.

Hi Speed,
Blogspot must have improved during the last few years. In the last 12 months I have had no outages, slow downs, etc. (knock on wood...)

I started on Word Press last year for the Vote Yes work. The problem was that I needed to drive hits quickly, since I did not open shop until October. And WP seemed a little challenging to get the right Google code put in the HTML... So, I moved on quickly.

Since, Blogspot is affiliated with Google. It seemed to help me get in their search engine faster. Another benefit is that it is easy to edit in HTML when advantageous.

I'll miss Power Blog though, creating links in the comments is so nice and easy. No need to type that HTML text...

Keep us informed. Someday I probably need to upgrade to a full blown web page where I can post "useful" documents. Not just screen shots that need to fit in a 2 X 3 area...

I looked at TypePad a couple of years ago. The lack of a good means to get my data out and move to another blog if I ever wanted to -- data, photos, and all -- is what turned me off. There wasn't even a good method to back up my blog. The only way I have all the control I want over that is to install my own WordPress blog. I use HostGator for that. If you want a really cheap hosting service, there is BigBytes.net. I used it for a while, then went to DreamHost (big mistake), and then to HostGator.

Thanks all for the help! Still surfing the web for reviews and comparisons. One thing seems clear, that even the "worst" options today are almost all better than the "best" options available 5 years ago. They're all getting better.

Still no decision yet, more input welcome!

I kept coming back to blogger. WP blew up on me and we use it at work and it's complicated. Joomla is too clunky. Haven't used any of the other ones.
